Term paper language
The main criterion for any term paper is that it should be “readable”. This understands the following:
- Writer’s thoughts should be stated clearly, without waffle;
- The whole term paper should be written in living, figured language, this is what distinguishes term papers from other pieces of writing;
- There’s no doubt the term paper is a serious work, nevertheless there should be no place to dullness in it. This doesn’t mean that the essay should be written in a light manner, but heavy phrasal constructions and long syntactical statements should be avoided;
- Unnecessary words should be eliminated from the text of term paper, they only occupy extra space and weaken reader’s attention and interest; unknown and “enigmatic” terms are to be omitted, they only puzzle the reader;
- Mind the usage of passive and active voices! The specialists say that the problems in perception of complex phrasal unities provokes difficulties in understanding of given material. That’s why it’s recommended to use active voice to avoid long and unnecessarily sophisticated sentences;
At the same time specialists advise to use parenthetic words (for instance, for example, naturally, surely, on the other hand etc.) which facilitate the transition from one passage to another or between two chapters. Such words do not make the text look smarter, but they play the part of “signs” which direct the reader through the labyrinth of writer’s ideas.
The writer should work on the content and structure of term paper until it looks perfect and the perception of the information is easy enough for readers of different level. There should be no place for “secret” meanings, it’s not a piece of poetry, it’s a serious term paper.
